What's Salvia?
Basically, Salvia Divinorum is a plant that originated in Oaxaco, Mexico. When ingested, it can produce mind altering effects. Salvanorian A is the most potent component and causes natural occuring hallucenagens. This compound is effective at 200-500 micrograms where LSD is active at 50-100. The leaves can be put in tea or chewed but the most popular method is smoking.
Beware the Smurfers!
Part of the ever growing production of Methamphetamines in labs is due to the availability of Pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is in many over the counter cough & cold medications. People called "smurfers" take advantage of these medications by purchasing the maximum amount alloted in different pharmacies each day. By making Pseudoephedrine accessible soley via prescription status, we can alleviate many of the issues that Methamphetamines cause in our communities.
Local Heros
Recently, two Allsup's convenience store clerks refused to sell alcohol to a customer who had alcohol on his breath. This effort was recognized by the Coalition with an award & gift card. Details to follow
in the upcoming newsletter. Congratulations to the clerks for this great step in prevention for our community!

Frightfully Fun!
Amidst the witches, superheros and fairies an important message was sent to the families of Carlsbad who participated in the 13th annual downtown Trick or Treat and Fall Festival. The Coalition was given the opportunity to talk about simple steps that parents can utilize regarding proper disposal and storage of prescription drugs. These steps include; 1) Use a lockbox to store medications, 2) Dispose of medications in kitty litter or coffee grounds, 3) Never flush medications as it gets into the communities water supply and 4) Never refer to medications as candy to children.
Who's Hungry?
"I don't want to eat my vegetables!" I remember making that statement as a child when presented with the dreaded green beans and carrots. At the time, I didn't appreciate the blessing. Of course now I realize how important the availability and accessibility of food is to the people of Carlsbad. Are you hungry in the spirit of helping others in the community? Providing a sustainable resource such as homegrown vegetables is just one of the goals for the creation of a local community garden.
