This quote was typical of the feedback that was heard after yesterday's
Employers' Forum for a Drug-Free Workplace. More than twenty participants took
part in cutting-edge prevention strategy. For this forum the Coalition partnered
with the Small Business Development Center, a division of New Mexico State
University-Carlsbad.
Monday September 22 Eat Dinner With Your Family Day
Kudos to the Eddy County Commission, who issued a proclamation at their 17 September meeting, declaring every fourth Monday in September "Family Day--a day to eat dinner with your children."
Prevention research shows that time set aside for eating dinner as a family helps kids be less interested in drugs. So, if you're not already in the habit, why not try it on Monday? Turn off the computer, TV and cell phones and enjoy the company of those who love you most.
Preventing Workplace Substance Abuse
As a Coalition we've noticed a recurring theme: over the last several months
we've heard feedback from employers and community members about substance abuse
and the workplace. Many adults choose to be drug free, but this is still an
issue of deep concern. This affects our local families, our community, the pool
of eligible employees...it also affects the bottom line.
Hot Topic--Student Drug Testing
A recent federal grant announcement offers significant funding for student drug testing. This announcement is one impetus that has brought the issue of drug testing into the spotlight on many levels. Woods Houghton, Eddy County Extension Agent and Coalition Community Board Chair, just returned from a student drug testing summit in Albuquerque. Here is his report:
